Sharmila Tagore and Shashi Kapoor are the young lovers whose breezy romance warms up on the skating rink but turns tragic when circumstances forces them to part even though she is pregnant. The film has a touching performance from Master Tito playing their handicapped child who re-unites the couple. Melodies from R D Burman include ‘Vaada Karo Nahin Chodoge’ and two versions of ‘Tera Mujhse Hai Pehle’.

Prem, jeune homme au chomage, et Preeti, étudiante en médecine, ont un enfant hors mariage. A sa naissance, le père de Preeti, qui ne considère pas Prem comme un parti convenable, fait croire à la mère qu'il est mort-né et le confie à Prem, lui ordonnant de ne jamais plus s'approcher de sa fille. Celle-ci doit se marier, mais fort heureusement son fiancé passe son temps à reculer la date de la cérémonie. Prem élève seul son enfant handicapé, et finit par rencontrer de nouveau Preeti.
