The 2009 version of E3 series, Zuken’s software for engineering electrotechnical, pneumatic and hydraulic applications has made massive steps forward on both a detailed user level and on a system design level. Highlights include advanced support of product variants and options; of particular benefit to companies in industries such as automotive and machinery sectors, and functionality improvements for support of ribbon cables and curved connections enables designers to improve reliability and save time. There have also been great leaps in technology specific to particular modules within E3 series; introducing hierarchical design capabilities for E3 cable and integrated 3D functionality within E3 panel.
While Eł.series already supports options and variants, for the first time it is easy to combine several options and/or variants together. It is now possible to define a set of variations for each model of a product, without having to have a different copy of all parts of the drawing. A user has one batch of different drawings for all options and then variants can be stored, without duplicating the different drawings for each product option. The bottom line is, this means less work to generate new more advanced models of products; as the user no longer has to copy and recreate all the data, they can just change parts of it. This has massive time saving and quality benefits.
Not being able to see and easily access design files to visualize the bigger picture can be very frustrating for electrical designers. In the 2009 version of cabling and harness design tool a user is now able to view the complete hierarchy of the design from top to bottom, making navigation and interpretation of the final product much easier. More critically this clear design structuring makes design reuse a reality and also allows designs to be partitioned, enabling work to be performed in parallel. This logical structuring saves time, delivers more flexibility and facilitates collaboration.

Delcam has introduced a new post-processing system, PM-Post, that runs automatically from within its PowerMILL CAM software to process CL data into a tape file appropriate to the selected machine tool control. The new system will make it much easier for users to make changes to the standard range of post-processing options that might be needed after any upgrade or other modification to their machine tools.
PM-Post is based around structured tables of parameters rather than the complex text files used previously. A pre-defined range of options is presented to the user in a clearly-organised series of templates, covering parameters such as tool loading, circle processing and any other special routines, and any multi-axis modes. This clear presentation of the full range of options will make it much easier for users to edit the default templates as required. Furthermore, the software automatically creates a revision history showing who made the changes and when.
Similarly, it will make it much easier for Delcam’s international network of Sales Partners to configure a post-processor for any customers with unusual or bespoke machine tools. In most cases, they will be able to make the required alterations on the spot so allowing new customers to get up to speed with their software more quickly.
PM-Post will also simplify any trouble-shooting that might need to be done with any problematic files. The software is able to read in the file and tell the user exactly where the problem occurred, so allowing easier diagnosis and correction of the error.
More advanced programming options are available to users able to generate Visual Basic or Java scripts. Examples might include allowing a list of cutters used within the program to be placed at the start of the file or calculating the cut time with each tool.
