With Gandhi My Father, producer Anil Kapoor and director Feroz Abbas Khan have shed light onto Gandhi the person, rather than Gandhi the icon. Using Gandhi’s political career as a canvas, the film paints a picture of his intricate, complex, and strained relationship with son Harilal Gandhi (Akshaye Khanna). This is the story of a man who lived in the enormous shadow of his father, striving to discover his own identity ‘til his last breath.
The legacy of ‘Mahatma‘ Gandhi is one that has, and will continue to inspire the social, spiritual and political evolution of nations throughout the world. ‘Mahatma‘ meaning ‘the great soul‘, he changed the history of India and fuelled its autonomy from British rule, through peaceful activism, finally achieved in 1947. His unfettered journey towards India‘s independence was a labour of unconditional love but, tragically, it was these very principles that induced estrangement from the eldest of his three sons, Harilal. Set against the backdrop of Mahatma Gandhi's political career in South Africa and later his struggle for independence in India, "Gandhi, My Father" tells the intensely personal true story of one of the most important father figures in contemporary history and his failed relationship with his own son..
